Slavist Arie van der Ent married a Ukrainian, settled under Kyiv and continued to live there when the war broke out. He did, however, write two things every day, to record and confront the madness – and incidentally the fear – with space here and there for the smaller things of life, happy or not – the punctual fifty-word War Diary and the Armageddon sonnet.
